If you suffer from dental anxiety and it has been keeping you from seeing the dentist then you would be an excellent candidate for sedation. If you experience stress or worry when it comes to even the thought of getting dental care there are many other people with this same problem. However, sedation dentistry has been able to relieve these patients of their dental anxiety and it can do the same thing for you. Also, there are different types of sedation and the kind you will be administered would depend on what’s best for your anxiety and comfort level. To learn more about these sedation options review the points below.

Your Sedation Options
There are several different sedation options to better meet the exact needs of every patient including:

  • Oral sedatives – This sedation is delivered with a simple pill. The pill is taken with a glass of water about an hour before the appointment. This is a good solution for patients who are scared of needles.

  • Nitrous Oxide (N2O) – Sometimes called laughing gas, N2O is an odorless gas delivered through a breathing tube with a mixture of oxygen. It goes to work quickly and lasts as long as the delivery is maintained. The patient feels deeply relaxed and recovers soon after the gas is removed.

  • Local anesthetic – This is an injection applied to the part of the mouth receiving treatment. The tissue will quickly become numb, so the patient does not experience any pain or discomfort. Full consciousness is maintained.

  • IV conscious sedation – This sedation is best for people with pronounced dental anxiety. The patient remains conscious and can answer questions though will not remember much, if anything, about the procedure.
