What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns, sometimes referred to as caps or crown restorations, are custom-made to look and function just like your natural teeth. Typically made of sturdy, shiny, and eye-catching porcelain, crowns can be used to top teeth that have cracks, chips or have been significantly worn down due to decay. The crown is placed over the tooth to protect it from further harm and restore the aesthetics of your smile. Dental crowns can also be fitted onto dental implants via an abutment to replace a completely missing tooth. Once placed, dental crowns can permanently restore the natural appearance, the feel, and the functionality of your real teeth.

How Do Dental Bridges Differ from Crowns?

Dental bridges will give your mouth the appearance of having a full set of natural teeth. In fact, they are similar to dental crowns, but are different in one very important respect: Instead of restoring a damaged tooth, a dental bridge can “replace” a missing tooth and “bridge” the gap. A bridge is a collection of dental crowns that are attached together to form one solid restoration piece. Usually attached to abutment teeth, bridges can prevent the shifting of surrounding teeth into the area where teeth are missing and restore form and function again.
